The Risks, Rewards, & Resilience in Fostering Healthy Relationships: Foster Care Parent & Kinship Care Education

This successful strengths-focused, trauma informed, resilience-targeted, evidence-based psycho-dynamic model of practice addresses the loss, trust, attachment, adjustment outcomes, developmental, cultural, and bereavement issues of children placed with resource families.  This workshop does not focus as much on identifying resilience as it does on promoting resilience. Emphasis is placed on the development of compassionate attitudes, patience, and sense of humor coupled with the explanations of providers being "the parent-plus."   The case workers' potential experience of "compassion fatigue" will aslo be explored.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this program the attendees will gain the following:

1. Fostering resilience among children in difficult life circumstances (adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats, parental substance abuse, sexual or physical abuse, etc.)

2. Good role modeling of being "an instrument of inspiration"  (example - using effective healthy discipline strategies to be replicated by parents, etc.)  opposed to being "a tool of torture" while giving children a safe place to stay while their families get the help they need.
